A .com inside a .com

Most domain endings are top-level domains that IANA delegates in the DNS root zone: .com, .io, .it. .it.com works differently. it.com is itself an ordinary .com domain, registered in Verisign's .com registry, and IT.COM Domains Ltd sells names one level below it. When you register yourname.it.com, you get a subdomain of it.com that the company runs for you like a domain of its own: your own name servers, your own DNS, your own email.

Why people pick it

"IT" reads as information technology, and the address still ends in the familiar .com. Short names that disappeared from .com long ago can still be free under it.com, and some phrases read like a sentence: make.it.com, fix.it.com, ship.it.com.

The trade-off

Because the whole namespace hangs off a single .com domain, ICANN's agreements with TLD registries don't apply to it directly. The operator's own terms govern registrations, renewals, transfers and disputes. The model isn't new: names like uk.com and us.com have been sold the same way for years. Before you commit, check the renewal price as well as the first-year offer, and keep in mind that some people will hear "it.com" and type .it or .com.

Good for

  • IT services, tech products and dev tools that want "IT" right before the .com
  • Short names that were taken in .com itself decades ago
  • Phrases that read like a sentence, such as make.it.com or fix.it.com

Watch out for

  • It isn't a TLD — every name sits under it.com, a .com domain owned by one company, so everything rides on that company and that domain
  • ICANN's registry agreements don't cover it directly; the operator's own terms do, so read them first
  • First-year prices are often promotional, and renewals can cost several times more
  • Some people will read it as Italy (.it), or just type .com

.it.com by the numbers

.it.com names are subdomains of it.com, a .com domain run by IT.COM Domains Ltd. It's not in the IANA root zone, so it has no root-zone record, delegation date or DNSSEC status of its own.

.it.com FAQ

Is .it.com a real top-level domain?

No. It isn't in the IANA root zone. it.com is an ordinary .com domain, and its owner sells names one level below it — so yourname.it.com is technically a subdomain of it.com, managed for you like a domain of its own.

Does .it.com have anything to do with Italy?

No. Italy's country code is .it, run by the Italian registry under its own rules. .it.com is a separate, privately run namespace inside .com.

Who runs .it.com?

IT.COM Domains Ltd, a UK company that owns it.com and acts as the registry for every name under it. Registrars such as GoDaddy, Gandi and Atak Domain sell the names.

Who can register a .it.com domain?

Anyone, anywhere, on a first-come, first-served basis. Registrars don't ask for documents or a local address.

How long can I register a .it.com domain for?

From one to ten years at a time, and renewals also run from one to ten years.

Can a .it.com name use accents or non-Latin scripts?

No. Internationalized (IDN) names aren't supported, so stick to the letters a–z, digits and hyphens.

When did .it.com launch?

A sunrise period for trademark holders ended on January 31, 2023. After a short early-access phase, registration opened to everyone in February 2023.
