Delegation dates come from ICANN for generic TLDs and from IANA where it records them. Most early country codes have no recorded date, so the 1980s and 1990s look emptier than they were.

How many country-code TLDs are there?

309. 248 of them are the familiar two-letter codes — one for nearly every country and territory in ISO 3166-1 — and 61 are internationalized versions such as .рф (Russia) and .中国 (China). See them all on the country list or the 3D map.

How many generic TLDs are there?

1,127. Before ICANN's 2012 New gTLD Program there were only 22 generic TLDs. The program added 1,060 that are still active, with the biggest wave in 2014 (397 delegations that year). 366 of today's generics are brand TLDs that only their owner can use — see the brand TLD list.

What were the original TLDs?

The first generic TLDs went live in January 1985: .com, .edu, .gov, .mil, .net and .org, alongside the infrastructure domain .arpa — which is why you'll see the "original TLDs" counted as either six or seven. .int followed in 1988. The oldest TLDs list has the full timeline.

Is .co.uk a TLD?

No. In example.co.uk, the top-level domain is .uk; co.uk is a second-level space the .uk registry created for companies. The same goes for .com.au, .com.br and similar endings.

How many website extensions are there?

"Website extension", "domain extension" and "TLD" all mean the same thing here, so the answer is the same 1,437. If you count every second-level space like .co.uk as an "extension", the number runs into the thousands — but those aren't separate TLDs.
